As paper machine speeds begin to increase with improvements to wet end and press equipment, the flood recovery characteris-tics of a close clearance rotary syphon can begin to exceed the operating limits of the dryer drainage system. A low differential rotary syphon has been developed which remarkably combats the effects of centrifugal force at higher speeds, improving both operating and flood recovery differential pressure requirements. Operating data from newsprint, line paper and linerboard are presented to illustrate the improvements in dryer performance under varying operating conditions.
