Kathie R. Rutledge-Cropsey Said Abubakr John H. Klungness USDA Forest Service Papermaking pulps from recycled wastepaper performs differ-ently on the paper machine than do similar never-dried pulps. One factor in the runnability difference is due to the differences in dried compared with never-dried fines. This study investi-gated the effect of drying on the runnability of a mixture of bleached hardwood and softwood pulps. In addition, an enzyme was used to enhance drainage of the once-dried fiber. Three paper machine runs were made, and all pulps were refined to the same freeness before papermaking. Never-dried pulp was used in the first run. Dried product from the first run was used for the furnish in the next two runs, one of which was treated with enzymes prior to papermaking and the other was not treated (control). The enzyme treatment was done to reduce the degree of hornification of the fines and improve drainage. The enzyme treatment consisted of adding a cellulase with a high filter paper activity to the pulp slurry after fiberizing. After the treat-ment, the pulp was refined to the original freeness. In each paper machine run, paper machine drainage, wet-web strength, pulp viscosity, and handsheet burst index were measured.
