Secondary Fiber Plant Operations Does Influence Paper Machine Performance, 1995 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Secondary fiber plant operation, primarily the washing process, can have a dramatic effect on the amount of fines and filler remaining in the recycled fiber. The efficiency of the washing system will impact paper machine sizing, retention and refining. With increased fines and filler removal, the sizing and retention systems benefit, however, refining loads are increased. In order to obtain the desired paper properties, the refining system and plate design must be reviewed to assure the proper treatment of the fiber. High washing efficiencies also increase the loading to the waste treatment plant. There are trade-offs that the secondary fiber plant must address as they relate to yield versus fiber quality being delivered to the paper machine. As a result, a good customer/supplier relationship must be developed between the paper machine and the secondary fiber plant. Recycled fiber can be successfully used in the production of fine papers with proper refining management and wet end control.
