The Georgia-Pacific Mill at Port Edwards has been engaged in the manufacture of premium and specialty papers for decades but a major emphasis has been placed on these grades over the past three years. Premium grades are defined for the purposes of this article to mean printing and writing grades with unique visual or physical attributes such as texture, exotic colors, very heavy basis weights flashy inclusions, watermarks and good press performance. Specialty papers are generally those with unique properties required for a subsequent end use by converters or for-coating base stock. They may also have some of the features of the premium family. In the course of this restructuring, numerous new offerings containing various levels of recycled fiber and post consumer waste have been developed. Some of the difficulties encountered with that raw material are presented along with a discussion of likely causes and possible remedial actions.
