The question for many superintendents today is how to most effectively reduce mill effluent while minimizing anj negative system impact. This paper addresses both mill eftluent reduction and potential system impacts from practical papermaker’s points of view. Reuse of the press section discharge water is often one of the last steps in the effort to reduce mill effluent because of the severe contamination in this stream. However. it can be done effectively. particularly if felt hair loss is addressed. Reuse of “waste” streams also mandates that fines management be addressed and this subject is discussed in detail.
