New and Innovative Internal Sizing Strategies for the Sizing of PC Containing Fine Paper, 1995 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Recently, the use of Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) as a tiller in fine paper manufacturing has increased significantly, first in North America than in Europe. Two synthetic sizes, Alkylketenedimer (AKD) based and Alkenylsuccinicanhydride (ASA) based are most commonly used. AKD and ASA are both used in North America, while in Europe AKD is most prominent. This paper deals with the specific problems related to the sizing of PCC containing fine paper. It discusses sizing in terms of physical and chemical characteristics and the interaction of the PCC particle and these two types of sizes. We will be discussing the level of internal sizing provided by these two sizes, curing speed, friction properties, and most of all, the effect of these sizes on ink-jet printability. The results of the new generation of AKD sizes and special new combinations of AKD and ASA sizes arc compared to conventional AKD and ASA sizes in the following paper. The Information is collected from various full scale production situations and pilot production runs.
