On the Mechanism Behind Flocculation By Microparticle Retention Aid Systems, 1995 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Lars Wågberg & Mirjam Björklund & Inger Åsell - SCA Research AB Agne Swerin STFI A retention aid system consisting of a cationic polyacrylamide and an anionic montmrorillonite clay has been investigated with special equipment designed for the determination of flocculation of cellulosic fibres. Comparison with a single component system, i.e. a cationic polyacrylamide, shows that the flocculating efficiency of the dual- component system is very dependent on the extension of the polymer out from the surface of the particles to be flocculated. This is supported by the results of experiments in which the binding of montmorillonite clay to fibres, which had been presaturated to different degrees with the cationic polyacrylamide, was studied. Experiments also show that a precoverage of the fibres with a polymer of low molecular mass prior to the addition of retention aids enhances the efficiency of the microparticle system.
