Improved understanding of the kinetics of interactions between furnish components and additives should offer major help in optimizing wet end performance of the paper machine. Papers presented in this little symposium illuminate various aspects of adsorption and interaction kinetics. Internal sizing is chosen as an example in the first paper. Kinetics is very rapid in conventional rosin sizing while rate of reactive sizing is measurably slower. Hydrolysis of the reactive groups in ASA and AKD sizes represents a competing side reaction with considerable economic impact, Various aspects of size hydrolysis, and more specifically, kinetics of AKD hydrolysis are discussed in some detail.
