Reducing Specific Energy in Refining with a New Key Figure and Innovative Fillings Materials, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
In stock preparation, the refining process has a significant influence both on product quality and on overall energy con-sumption figures. Therefore, it has always been wished to describe the refining process as precisely as possible with key figures. The complexity of the interrelations leads to a multitude of approaches. However, they all only included partial aspects. Based on Specific Edge Load SEL, a new intensity figure, called Modified Edge Load MEL is defined. Besides the parame-ters already reflected in specific edge load, it also takes the influence of bar angle, bar width and groove width into account. The flow conditions inside a refiner were optimized on the basis of this new key figure. Energy savings of 20 % were the re-sult. Over and above that, material developments enabled the recognition of further possibilities for organising the refining process more economically.
