Refining and the Development of Fibre Properties, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

The development of fibre length and coarseness of a never-dried unbleached softwood kraft pulp with refining were examined. However, it was found that the changes in the length-weighted fi-bre length did not completely reflect the changes in the number of long fibres per unit mass, as the measured average fibre length was affected by the generation of fines during refining. A number of sheet properties were also measured in an attempt to correlate the measured tensile strength with that predicted from the Page equa-tion. It was found that only a relatively poor fit between the theory and experiments could be obtained using the measured values of fibre length and coarseness. The major source of improvement in the tensile strength of the sheet was found to be an improvement in the bonded area of the sheet.
