Evaluation of the Lasentec Laser Microscope for Monitoring Refining, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
A Scanning Laser Microscope (SLM) produced by Lasentec was evaluated as an in-line means to measure fiber development during refining. The standard use for the instrument is to measure the size of particles in slurries. Fiber size changes caused by laboratory Valley beating or low-intensity pilot scale disk refining can be detected by the SLM. SLM particle size results were shown to relate to 1) Kajaani fiber length and coarseness of whole pulps and individual Bauer-McNett fractions; and 2) handsheet strength development. High intensity disk refining did not show the same correlation. The sensor is sensitive to flow rate and consistency when measuring wood pulp slurries. Sensor performance improves when measurements are made at low consistencies, such as 0.2%.
