Chemical Related Factors Influencing the Balance of Formation, Drainage, and Retention, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
The formation of a paper sheet is influenced by many factors, including the characteristics of the fibers, the mechanical action in the forming zone, the furnish components, and the chemical additives utilized in the wet end of the machine. Chemical additives that are part of retention programs provide benefits to the overall machine process, but are often detrimental to the formation of the sheet. Formation must be balanced with retention and drainage to achieve the desired sheet quality at an effective operating cost. This paper reviews the chemical related factors that influence formation in terms of their effect on the balance of retention, drainage, and formation. This information can be used for practical problem solving of formation issues.
