Alkenyl-Sustituted Sizing Agents for Precison Converting Grades of Fine Paper, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

The physical form of a sizing agent and its hydrolyzate at room temperature are good predictors of the sizing agent's effect on paper handling performance. In general, paper sized with liquid sizing agents had better runnability on high speed converting equipment than paper sized with solid sizing agents, regardless of the type of reactive functional group. A new class of sizing agents, based on unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids, was selected based on these results. Stable, ready to use emulsions of the new sizing agents are now in widespread use in North America and Europe.
