Stickies Reduction and Fiber Recovery in the Paper Mill, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Higher fiber costs and environmental rules have caused papermakers to experience some thorny problems. Increased demand for waste paper has driven recyclers to use lower quality grades. As a result, papermakers have had to deal with stickies problems more frequently. The first part of this paper discusses some ways to overcome the stickies problem, both in the paper mill and in the stock prep area. Environmental concerns have led to pressure to clean up the mill’s effluent discharge. The second part of this paper covers methods for recovering fiber from mill effluent streams while leaving dirt and debris behind.
