Evaluation of Drainage Improvement by Enzyme-Polymer Treatment, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Cellulolytic enzymes, in combination with polymeric flocculants, enhance the freeness of recycled fibers. Controlled laboratory filtration experiments with recycled pulps were conducted to determine if an increase in freeness translates to improvement in drainage. Enzyme treatment in combination with a high molecular weight cationic polymer was studied. A pressurized filtration cell was used to examine the effect of pressure on the filtration rate. An enzyme treated furnish showed a significant increase in filtration rate. This increase was not achieved by using polymer alone. From the data of filtration rate versus time, the specific filtration resistance (SFR), a characteristic furnish property, was calculated. The SFR values allowed for a quantitative comparison between various treatments.
