Use of Organophillic Mineral Particulates in Trash Like Pitch, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Organophilic mineral palticulates have long been used by industry to adsorb troublesome contaminants in water processes. Bentonites and talcs have been used effectively in a wide variety of applications because of their capacity to adsorb organic materials These mineral particulates are achieving greater importance in the paper industry as we achieve an understanding of the nature of their reactivity. Talc is accepted by the paper industry as an effective, low cost product for detackification of pitch and “stickies”. The mechanism for reactivity of bentonite particulates is similar to talc. Additionally however bentonites, particularly montmorillinite, are reactive with polymeric retention aids. We’ve found in our studies a definite synergy between an organophilic morltmorillinite particulate and high charge density, cationic polymers to give pitch retention and control in pulp and paper machine systems.
