Pitch or Stickies, 1996 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
The use of certain wood species for the manufacture of pulp and paper is rendered difficult because some wood components contain great amount of organic extractives. For all grades of pulp, a high resin content invites pitch deposits. The higher the resin level, the higher the incidence of pitch. The problem is more prevalent with hardwood or when hardwood is blended with softwood paper machine furnishes. Whereas wood resins are natural components, stickies are man made additives that impart specific characteristics to the finished product. Stickies, formed in repulping wastepaper, accumulate on forming fabrics, press fabrics and rolls, causing production as well as quality problems. Methods for differentiating pitch from stickies and methods for eliminating the deposit problems from either contaminants are discussed.
