Dramatic Improvements in Microbiological Control Using the Synergistic Activity Between Select Organic Biocides and a New-Halogenated Oxidant, 1997 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

An innovative microbiological control program has been developed that utilizes selected non-oxidizing biocides fed in conjunction with a new non-halogenated oxidant. This newly registered product is approved for use at low levels in paper process waters and is somewhat slower acting than traditional halogens, allowing it to persist through the papermachine system. It has been demonstrated that, by combining this chemistry with non-oxidizing biocides, synergistic activity results. Benefits to the papermaker include dramatic reductions in bacterial populations, which greatly improved machine cleanliness. The program has been found to be compatible with other chemistries used in the system and is friendly to machine surfaces and felt batt fibers. It eliminates anaerobic environments, subsequently reducing problems associated with anaerobic bacteria without forming environmentally hazardous degradation products.
