Operating Results of a TNT Reel, 1997 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Beloit’s TNT TM reel uses the basic tools of winding (Torque-Nip- Tension) to produce wound rolls with optimum roll structure. Reeling is accomplished without primary or secondary arms, and with no transfers of torque, nip, or tension control from the first wrap to the last. Beloit developed the TNT concept over a period of two years. Coincidentally, Stone-Consolidated Corporation’s Fort Frances Number 6 paper machine rebuild required reeling technology that was simply not available with the typical transfer type reel (or “Pope-type” reel) which has been used since the 1940’s. The team of Stone-Consolidated and Beloit collaborated on the first commercial installation of a TNT Reel. This paper reviews the team effort which was required, the mechanical changes to the development model that were required by the application, and the performance of this revolutionary reeling concept.
