On the Direct Measurement of the Number and Severity of Fiber Impacts in Refining, 1997 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Transient voltages appearing on the surfaces of refining elements due to fiber impacts, discovered by Brenholdt, have been characterized in terms of the number, N, and severity, S, of these impacts. The separate identification of these two parameters has heretofore eluded the efforts of many in the scientific community. These parameters have been shown to agree with published theories regarding their relationship to refining action and the properties of refined pulps. Excellent correlations with fiber and hand sheet properties have been found - e.g. fiber size, freeness, burst, etc. In addition, these parameters track plate wear and detect the occurrence of the critical gap. All of these results were found in both pulp and wood chip refining. The patented sensor developed to make these measurements does not require penetration of the stock flow piping or the refiner.
