Sizing and Ink Jet Printing of European Multi-Purpose Office Paper, 1997 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Multi-purpose office paper is used in copiers, laser printers and increasingly in ink jet printers. Paper performance in these devices is influenced by surface and internal sizing agents. Each type of device has its own demands with respect to paper properties and often paper composition is a compromise to meet the different requirements set by these devices. Ink Jet Print Quality of European multi-purpose office paper was evaluated as a function of type and amount of internal and surface size. Image Analysis Techniques were used to study the Ink Jet Print Quality of paper samples printed with Hewlett-Packard 500 series printer. Good Ink Jet Print Quality means a sharp print and intense colors. For this first series printer, composite black optical density was found to improve while color bleeding was found to worsen with increasing internal sizing level of the paper. Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) sized paper achieved higher optical densities for composite black than Alkenyl Succinic Anhydride (ASA) sized paper could. The trade-off between color bleed and composite black optical density was not found with surface sizing; upon increasing the addition levels both improved.Multi-purpose office paper is used in copiers, laser printers and increasingly in ink jet printers.
