A novel treatment of Precipitated Calcium Carbonate (PCC) allows the use of this pigment as an extender, opacifyer and brightener in acid/neutral paper furnishes without addition of acids to reduce pH. By maintaining pH below 7, the white water from paper machine is usable in the bleaching operations in addition, the alkaline darkening effects on the paper are reduced. The monitoring of pH and dissolved calcium levels in headbox, tray, and white water shows that there is minimal degradation in this pigment in slightly acidic furnish. Low levels of dissolved calcium produce less foaming and indicate that paper machine deposits should not be an issue. The continuous use of neutrally buffered PCC (up to 17% PCC filler ) in production of regular news print, specialty grades ranging from directory to rotogravure-news have shown no retention problems or difficulties with the paper properties.
