Factors Affecting Newsprint Friction and Subsequent Control of Friction with Process Changes, 1998 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
An investigation to find the factors that influence coefficient of friction on newsprint was carried out at the Stone Container Corporation Snowflake Mill. The investigation revealed that intermittently high anionic trash and conductance were interfering with sheet surface characteristics. This was causing lower surface strength, therefore lower coefficient of friction (COF). Sheet density was also found to have an influence on COF. Once the factors were identified, the Mill found ways to manage COF using wet end and pulping process changes.
