Cost Efficient Use of Fillers, 1999 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Mark Smith
Fillers are used for two main reasons, first to give certain desirable properties to the final product and secondly as a low cost fibre replacement material.
If the filler used is being added to enhance the final product properties, then the cost per unit of improvement needs to be controlled so that only the minimum of the most cost effective filler is used.
If the filler is added as a fibre replacement, the maximum savings without unacceptable deterioration in productivity or product properties needs to be considered so that the maximum of the most effective filler is used.
This presentation will give a brief summary of how these factors can be evaluated so that the correct filler selection can be made. A case study is discussed showing how a mill can achieve a range of product qualities in a uncoated woodfree grade with careful selection of calcium carbonate products.
