Third Generation Reeling, 1999 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Mr. Kaj Fabritius, Jeff Gorges, Ward Patton

A new method of mastering paper and board mill efficiency has arrived with the OptiReel Plus TM third generation reel. Capitalizing on the experience of over 50 installed new generation production reels worldwide, we have further improved our reel in a logical continuation of the second generation OptiReels. Critical areas of the reel itself and the reeling process have been optimized.

Specific features resulting from user feedback include:

· Improved tension measurement system. The new reel improves parent roll quality due to better reeling parameter control and web tension and measurement control.

· Advanced nip load control. A very stable roll build-up sequence from the first layers up to the final layers of parent reel is possible because of new mechanical and control design. Linear load and torque can be optimized grade by grade due to improved system design.

· Reliable turn-up. While the original reel has always had a very reliable turn-up even at very high speeds and on challenging paper grades, we have developed a new web cutting philosophy that further improves turn-ups.

· Efficient parent roll build-up. The new reel has a surface hardness control roll which supports the roll surface up to the final layers of each parent roll.

· Unprecedented line efficiency achievable due to new solutions. The entire reeling process has been optimized which means the new reel can build-up larger parent reel diameters under the best possible process control. All paper and board grades are supported.

· Easy to operate. The new reel is operator friendly and designed together with customers in paper mill environments.
