A flexible pulp drainage testing device was optimized in order to produce accurate laboratory simulations of water removal from newsprint and closed packaging system pulps. The test method was validated by comparing laboratory results to a series of paper machine trials. Laboratory experimental response variables were successfully correlated with total paper machine water removal, retention, and sheet formation on a mill scale. The new test method allows laboratory retention, drainage, and formation product development and process studies to be performed in papermaking systems where conventional tests such as Canadian Standard Freeness are of limited value.
