Initial Development of an Improved Water Retention Value Test and its Application to the Investigation of Water Removal Potential, 1999 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

F. Ahrens, N. Alaimo, H. Nanko, T. Patterson--A laboratory centrifugal dewatering test for compressed or uncompressed paper webs is proposed, developed and demonstrated. This Modified Water Retention Value (MWRV) test builds on the learnings, and improves on the techniques, of Abson and of Maloney and Paulapuro. The test provides an estimate of the intra-fiber moisture content of a wet web that has experienced a desired applied compression pressure. Ideally, the result defines the maximum possible dewatering (without use of evaporation) for that web and loading.
