Novel Method of Understanding the Softness of Tissue Paper, 1999 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Jin Liu, Jeffery Hsieh
Research efforts of major tissue producers have continued to improve tissue product quality. Among properties of tissue paper, softness is the most important and also the most difficult one to describe quantitatively.
This paper reviewed the current understanding of tissue softness. Important factors that affect softness, such as tensile, stiffness, extensibility, Free Fiber End index, are discussed. Five brands of facial tissue were selected from the market, and the bulk of each brand under different pressures was measured. A factor “cushioness” was defined to describe the compressibility of tissue sheets. The bulk softness and W, the work done by the pressure foot of bulk tester in compressing tissue sheets, were correlated. A hyperbolic relationship was found and the R 2 was 0.90. This work shows W may be served as an indicator for the bulk softness of tissue paper.
