Improving Sheet Quality on a Multi-Ply Coated Board Machine, 1999 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

Serge Levasseur, Joseph Parisian, Tom Patell

Cascades Jonquiere produces a high quality 3-ply coated boxboard using a triple fourdrinier. The center ply constitutes the majority of the total sheet weight. A top wire former was fitted to the middle ply fourdrinier to improve middle ply formation and final sheet smoothness. The existing rod/air knife coater was also modified to a rod/rod coater to capitalize on the improved sheet uniformity. Final sheet smoothness with the top former / rod coater combination was improved 50%.
