Biocides in the Production of Packaging Papers, 1999 Papermakers Conference Proceedings
Stefan G. Kleemann
The water used in the production of paper and board is an excellent environment for microorganisms to grow in. The water has a temperature of between 25°C and 60°C and a pH of between 4.5 and 9, and it provides a rich supply of organic nutrients for bacteria and fungi. These microorganisms are deposited on the internal surfaces of the paper machine and pipework and form slime. However, microorganisms do not only form at the papermaking stage, they are immanently capable of forming in many raw materials.
