Fiber Motion in Single and Multiple Screen Slots, 2000 Papermakers Conference Proceedings

A flexible fiber motion model was coupled to a wall model and flow calculation to calculate the 3-D trajectory of a single fiber in screens. The fiber is modeled as chains of spheroids linked together by joints. Both rigid and flexible fibers can be modeled by changing the bending constants of the joints. The flow in the screen is simulated by using a three dimensional curvilinear Navier-Stokes code with local segmentation capabilities. The numerical results qualitatively agree with the experimental results conducted in a single-slot test apparatus. The methods could be used to analyze and improve the performance of screens, which are critical to the pulp and paper industry.
