ISO 9000 and Accreditation, 1990 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings
The evaluation of an organization’s quality system is not a new concept, especially in UK. Certain sectors of industry have experienced assessments through the Ministry of Defense since the early 1970’s.
Although in the mid 1970’s system assessments on suppliers had become well established with many purchasing organizations, the evaluation was generally to ‘in-house” requirements. With the issue of BS 57.50 in 1979 a degree of uniformity was introduced as purchasing bodies could then specify a definitive assessment Standard. In March 1987, the International Standards Organization published a series of assessment standards (IS0 9000 to 9004) and this set of documents has imparted the desired international flavour to Quality System assessments. Within Europe, and in light of the forthcoming “unified market” the European equivalent to the IS0 series has been published - EN 29000 to EN 29004.
