Market Needs and Benefits, 1990 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings
Just-in-time (JIT) manufacturing philosophy places the quality responsibility with each supplier in the manufacturing process. As firms adopt this philosophy, inventories of materials and components decrease, handling with the manufacturing process decreases, and costs of manufacturing decrease, and quality increases. For JIT to work, each material and component supplier must take the responsibility for the quality of the material or component supplied. Quality is demonstrated by adherence to the IS0 9000 standards for quality systems and the IS0 Guides 25 and 38 for testing. Once a supplier qualifies its production to these standards, then that production should be acceptable for all users of the materials or components. This in turn simplifies the supplier’s quality system, reduces the cost of quality, and minimizes the oversight which has become typical in the JIT manufacturing process.
