Problem with Comparing On-Line Gauging Statistics from Different Paper Machines. A Case Study, 1992 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings
Linerboard produced to equal values of statistical variation as measured and calculated by on-line gauging equipment was observed to perform differently as measured by product performance on corrugating machines. This observation prompted an investigation into the sources and possible reasons for the disparity. The on-line gauging system parameters that impact statistical calculations were first catalogued and compared for each Union Camp linerboard machine. Next, an experiment was conducted to compare the quality statistics generated from the same scan data manipulated into different data box widths. The results of this experiment show that varying data box width does change the magnitude of the statistics of variation and does confirm that roll quality statistics may not be directly comparable.
