Monitoring Recycle Deinking Process Performance Through Image Analysis, 1993 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

C.A. McNabb

Image analysis has been used for some time in combination with pulp brightness to evaluate the relative effectiveness of competitive deinking chemicals in the lab. More recently, IA results have been included as a quality specification in performance guarantees. Paper companies now hope to use IA as a daily quality control tool.

A hierarchical analysis of variance experiment confirmed that most if not all of the statistical uncertainty in this technique is related to the inherent variation found in low concentration systems. It is critical that sufficient sample area be scanned o keep testing uncertainty to an acceptable level. It was decided that for an IA system to be useful in a mill lab environment it had to be simple to use, durable, and capable of quickly scanning a large sample area. Several IA options were reviewed in light of this criteria.
