In the past two decades Image Analysis has gone from unknown to routinely used. The cry for standardization on Image Analyzers is being heard throughout the pulp and paper industry. This is another such cry. Basic image analyzing uses the same concepts no matter what instruments or electronics are used. It should not be that difficult to create a standardization package for all Image Analyzers.
What is expected from standardization, how it might be achieved, and the variables that interfere or affect standardization are discussed. A specific proposal for standardization is presented. Some questions that arise from this proposal are addressed. The industry desperately needs standards for this now commonplace everyday technology. This must be addressed immediately.
