Standardization has become a world-wide activity in those fields where it is essential. Primarily the task is to standardize terminology, definitions and test procedures. There is however a regrettable conservatism in some quarters, and a reluctance to follow standards even when they have been published. Standardized test methods provide a reference for meaningful specifications when it is desired to standardize products. World-wide agreement is promoted by the standardization of calibration systems. Standardization costs money but is justified because ultimately it saves money.
