A review of the various TAPPI and related fiber test methods is presented for evaluation. Some of these involve fiber length, coarseness, fiber analysis, nonwoody fiber, and softwood identification. Consideration will be given to the techniques and complexities of actually performing the tests, especially for those done on a routine basis. The information generated from these tests is examined, and an opinion on the intrinsic value of data will be given. Recommendations will be presented for changes in the official methods, and for some eventually placing them in a historical methods category.
