The collection of quality data has been going on ever since the first test measurement was made on a piece of paper. It is through the collection and analysis of test data that mills have an opportunity to evaluate the capability of their processes and to then decide what resources, if any, should be dedicated to making further improvements to the products being produced. This paper reviews the history of one mill’s data collection system and examines how, when combined with a quality program designed to meet ISO 9002 standards, the reliability of the associated quality data has improved thereby improving the overall productivity and effectiveness of the quality program.
