The concept of Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) is widely supported but poorly defined. One of the first attempts to define a SFM specification is the Canadian Standards Association Sustainable Forest Management System, which mandates that SFM be defined on a forest-by-forest basis with an open public participation process. There are many implementation issues associated with developing and implementing a SFM system to the CSA specification. These include technical issues such as information requirements and analysis capability and process issues such as identifying values, selecting related indicators, and setting objectives. In turn, these are related to the issue of implementation, performance, and continual improvement of the SFM system.
