Fiber length measurement is widely used in paper and board mills to monitor pulp quality. Classification methods are still being used for fiber length determination, but devices based on optical measurement principles have increasingly become the standard practices, replacing tedious classification. With the introduction of optical on-line analyzers, the utilization of fiber length has entered a new era. In the stock blending proc-ess, fiber length measurement provides a tool for furnish quality optimization; it allows estimation of paper strength proper-ties; and also formation and porosity of paper can be control-led by means of fiber length.
