Environmentally Benign PSA Stamps, 1997 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

With the increased use of pressure-sensitive stamp products have emerged concerns about their environmental impact. To address these concerns, the United States Postal Service initiated an environmentally benign pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) program to develop PSA postal stamps that do not adversely affect the environment. As part of this program, experimental adhesives were evaluated for stamp performance specifications, laboratory recycling, and pilot-scale recycling. Results of the laboratory and pilot-scale recycling trial results are presented here. For both sets of trials, all experimental PSAs were repulpable and adhesive levels were reduced satisfactorily by screening, cleaning, and flotation processes.
