Dynamic Wet Fibre Flexibility Analyzer, 1997 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

A dynamic method capable of measuring the wet fibre flexibility of a large sample of pulp fibres has been developed based on analyzing the deformation of wood fibres exiting from a side capillary penetrating a main channel (T-junction), with water flowing through the capillary into the main channel flow. As a fibre exits the capillary tube, it is transiently deformed by the main channel flow. At least two images of the fibre are collected using a CCD camera, a deformed fibre at the exit of the capillary and an undeformed fibre downstream of the capillary. Since the flow field is well described, in this case determined numerically, the resulting forces acting on the fibre within the T-junction are known. The flexibility of the fibre is then determined based on the deflection of the fibre under known loading conditions.
