The relationship between commercial print quality and paper formation was carried out on 32 samples representing the typical range of uncoated offset papers in the North American market. A new method of formation measurement was used which provides the nonuniformity of formation over a range of scale of formation 0.l-20mm. Where the r 2 correlations between print quality and the formation index of three widely used test instruments, the NUI, the Micro-Scanner and the M/K Systems formation test were respectively 0.22, 0.35 and 0.375, the r 2 value using the formation nonuniformity over the 4- 8mm scale of formation as determined by the new method was 0.56.
