Impact of Formation on Print-Through Measurement, 1997 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings
Commercial-scale heat-set web offset printing trials on six typical uncoated offset papers in the North American market were the basis for a study of visual print-through severity. Unprinted paper samples were evaluated by standard physical methods and printed samples were evaluated for print-through severity by all pairs ranking as well as by optical measurements. Print-through characterization using large area reflectance measurement did not relate well to visual assessment. Opacity of the unprinted paper was not a good predictor of visual print-through severity. Formation of the base papers was found to have a strong relation to the perceived severity of print-through.
