Design and Development of a Twin-Wire Handsheet Former, 1999 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

Christopher Hammock & Gil Garnier--Modern papermaking science lacks a method to reliably simulate in the laboratory the sheet forming process as it occurs in industry. The handsheet maker and the dynamic sheet former can produce sheets for the testing of mechanical properties, but are very poor at producing drainage or retention data. The dynamic drainage jar can provide drainage and retention data, but cannot produce a sheet for physical testing. Currently, pilot machines or mill trials are the only way to obtain industrially relevant data about a pulp or about wet-end chemistry. A laboratory scale twin-wire sheet former has been designed and developped at McGill University. This apparatus uses a short duration steady state sheet forming process in order to simulate industrial papermaking. The design and operation of this system will be presented, as will the results from some preliminary experimentation.
