Improving Quality and Process Efficiency at Minimal Cost Using Scientific Principles, 1999 Process & Product Quality Conference Proceedings

Yaser A. Ibrahim, Ahmed A. Ibrahim--Many problems facing the paper industry are caused by the inability to bridge the gap between the scientific principles and the day-to-day practice faced at the mill operating floor. While numerous research material has been undertaken in a variety of research centers and universities, it is evident that the man-hours invested and knowledge does not always find their place in typical papermill environments. There the daily struggle for superior sheet quality, customer satisfaction, high machine performance and profit are the goal. With the power of software programs on portable computers used as a tool, the gap between research material and practical papermaking operations is minimized. The case examples described in this article deal with the headbox, press-section and dryer-section of papermachines. It will be shown that with readily available information recorded on the mill floor, complex calculations are performed quickly and accurately to obtain optimum performance of equipment and sheet quality characteristics. Typical contribution in financial profit to the mill is classified for different grades structure that can not be ignored.
