Use Of Ash In Haps Removal (submitted by US Department of Energy), 2004 Paper Summit, Spring Technical & International Environmental Conference, (including Papermakers; Process Control, Electrical & Information; Product & Product Quality)

Regenerative catalytic oxidizers are usually run at high temperature to destroy most of the incoming VOCs. Much lower temperatures can be used if only HAPs are targeted. HAPs were significantly reduced when exposed to the catalytic material kept at 112oC. Wood fines can be used in place of the catalyst to absorb formaldehyde. These fines are typically burned as fuel, and this additional use as a sorbent would allow them to scavenge some of the HAPs prior to being burned. High-carbon bark boiler ash can also adsorb 90% of formaldehyde from a feed stream.

A heat transfer model for the release of terpenes during the pressing of softwood flakes was developed and validated. Most of the emissions originate from the hot 1-mm layer of wood adjoining the platen surface. Layering the mat surface with aspen to prevent direct contact between the platen and the softwood reduces emissions by over 60%.
