My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
A photocatalytic fluidized bed reactor was designed, fabricated, and optimized for carbon fluidization and UV intensity to significantly reduce emissions form a variety of sources at pulp, paper and paperboard mills and solid wood products facilities. Several activated carbons were investigated to determine the carbon best suited for methanol capture and in-situ regeneration. Although results were inconclusive as to what carbon properties were ideal for the intended purpose, it was learned that wood based carbons are preferred compared to coal based carbons. In bench scale experiments, titania coated carbon was capable of degrading approximately 100 ppm of methanol in 1 hour. Parallel efforts focused on titania doped silica-gel, and thus far, zero methanol degradation was realized.
