The inter dependency of kraft pulping conditions and O-delignification of HW kraft pulps was established. A series of low-kappa (~19) and high-kappa (~ 25) HW kraft pulps were prepared by varying the active alkali and cooking temperatures employed. Exploring these cooking variables, it was shown the level of rejects for high kappa HW kraft pulps could be minimized. Specifically, a medium active alkali charge of 14%, with a mild cooking temperature of 160 oC, exhibited great promise for integrating high kappa pulping of hardwoods with an advanced extended oxygen delignification stage. In this manner, the yield benefits of high-kappa cooking along with extended oxygen delignification were established. These laboratory studies indicate that by integrating kraft pulping operations with O-delignification, kraft pulp mills can significantly enhance their operational efficiency.
